Australian authors are being celebrated with the release of Booktopia's #AusFaveAuthor 2018. People from all over the country nominated over 1000 talented writers. Over the past few days Booktopia has been releasing the top 50 authors chosen by us, counting down to Australia's favourite author - Matthew Reilly! Congratulations to Matthew, and also to all the writers nominated. It's beautiful seeing all this support in our industry.
Shamefully, I've noticed that I don't read many Australian books. Scrolling through the top 50, I've come to realise that I haven't read any of these books either. I've desired to read Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief" after falling in love with the movie, however, fear that I'd like the movie more since I saw it first - something I feel often happens with book-to-film adaptions - stops me from picking it up.
Of course, a lot of these authors names I have heard of, such as Kate Forsyth and Zoë Foster-Blake. I just hadn't had the time to read as much as I'd have liked too, so I tended to stick with authors I'd read before. Looking back at 2017, I only read 28 books, with most of them being a part of a series I was already readying. The others were a few new titles I thought I'd try, with "A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares" by Krystal Sutherland as one of a very few Australian authored novels read of that year.
Though time to read will be lacking for me again this year, I perhaps will try and add a few more Aussie books to my TBR.
